Sound Treatments with
Crystal Singing Bowls

During my journey into learning as much as I could about Ayurveda I was inspired to get a set of quartz singing bowls after experiencing Ayurvedic Purification Treatments at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine. The treatments included this incredible sound healing massage. The sound vibrations surprised me in that I could feel them throughout my body, mind and spirit. It immediately heightened my awareness of my physical body and the energy field around me. The all-enveloping vibrations transported me into a heightened state of awareness and relaxation. The sound literally rippled around me, above me and through me. It filled the room in soothing crescendos I’d never experienced. It was transforming and magical.

After that experience I had the good fortune to meet Bowl Master Andrew Clark at Chopra Center Meditation retreat where I learned how to use the bowls as a tool for massage. I also learned his advanced techniques that included combining bowls to create Pythagorean Musical intervals or cords.

Both those experiences were so transformative for me. I started sharing this wonderful singing bowl treatment once a month at Harmony Learning Center in Decatur, where I developed my own style of working with the quartz singing bowls. Like other singing bowl practitioners, I place the bowls on the body’s Chakras or main energy centers that extend from the base center to the top of the head known as the Crown Chakra. Sometimes for meditation, I set the seven bowls in a V pattern with the crown bowl above the head on the floor and the base bowl below the feet. This arrangement encourages the flow of energy to move around the triangle allowing the bowls to communicate with each other heightening the reverberations.

From personal experience, I feel that the overall treatments with the singing bowls create new levels of awareness and sensitivity that dramatically reduce stress and raise the level of consciousness. I believe that the body takes in the tones and deeply entrains to the body’s own rhythms. This happens in the brain as the Alpha state is induced, and in the body as it settles down from the vibration of the bowl. We are in fact crystalline beings that naturally resonate with the sound that is produced by the crystal bowls.

Treatment

A full treatment involves me placing the bowls one at a time on seven different areas of the body and playing them. I start with the lower back, the upper back, the backs of the knees, then the bottoms of the feet. After that I have the person turn over and place a bowl on the shins, then the heart chakra and finally the forehead. I end the session with tingshas and the energy chime to return the person back to normal awareness gently.
